The Test Family in Butler Township
Columbiana County, Ohio
1803-1870

By Robert W. Test

1st Generation in Ohio.

Zaccheus Test and his 2nd wife Hannah Reeves arrived in Ohio in 1803. (See Certificate to go to Concord MM in Belmont Co., Oh dated Aug 9, 1803 and Certificate from Concord MM in Belmont Co., Oh to Middleton MM in Columbiana Co., Oh.) These certificates are in the records of the Middleton MM indicating the family arrived there as expected.

I believe they purchased section 23 in Butler Township of Columbiana County, Ohio in 1803. In any case the patent to the section was issued in 1805.

A section is a 640 acre tract of land: a square measuring one mile on all four sides. Columbiana County just north of the historic Seven-Ranges Tract. They placed their home at the northeast corner of section 23.

He also purchased 159.17 acres in range 4 township 17 section 28. This is in Goshen Twp in what later became a part of Mahoning Co. when it was created in 1846 (taking five townships from Columbiana Co. the south and ten townships from Trumbull County to the north).

Zaccheus Test died in 1820. His wife, Hannah, returned to New Jersey. The children now occupy most of section 23.

1. The oldest child, Benjamin, married Mary Schooley in 1805. In 1816 they moved about 60 miles south of Salem to the Shortcreek Monthly Meeting in Shortcreek Twp just north of Harrisville, Jefferson county, Ohio. They later moved to Indiana and Illinois.

2. According to the map, the 2nd son, Isaac Test, owns the northwest quarter section.

3. His brother, Samuel Test owns the southeast quarter section.

4. Sarah Test married Joseph Stratton (JS) and they settled on the middle portion of the section.

5. Rebecca Test married John Hilyard.
1850 Census

6. John Reeves Test -- no records.

7. Elizabeth R. Test married William F. Fawcett and lived her entire life in Salem Twp just to the east of Butler Twp.

8. Mary Test married Enos Strawn and they live in Goshen Twp just north of Butler Twp. When were they married? When was Goshen Twp - Mahooning Co. created -- top tier of townships taken from Columbiana county- given to newly created Mahooning co.

Goshen Twp 1850 Census -- In the 1850 census the name is written as Enos Strawson. But this is clearly the family of Enos Stawn and Mary Test. Martha and Edith are listed in both the 1850 and the 1860 census. In 1850 census Edith is 4 and Martha is 1. In the 1860 census, Edith is 15 and Martha is 11.

9. Zaccheus Test married Lucy Butler in Philadelphia and settled in Berlin Center, Ohio, Mahoning County.

10. Lydia Test died soon after birth.

11. Edith Test married William Fawcett's brother, viz., Richard B. Fawcett. According to 1850 Census they are in Perry Township 1850 Census Entry

1860 -- 3rd Generation in Ohio

1860 Butler Twp. Section 23

By 1860 the children of the 2nd generation are independent and farming their own land.

The Children of Isaac B. Test and Margaret Strawn:

1. Hannah Test (b. 1811)
2. Daniel Test (b. 1812)
3. Samuel Test (b. 1815)
4. Rebecca Test (b. 1817)
5. Zaccheus Test (b. 1826)
6. David Test (b. 1826)
7. Ann L. Test (b. 1829)

1. Hannah Test married to CL (Clayton Lamborn) is living on 52 acres on the west edge section 23 just south of Daniel Test. (See Page 77 of the 1860 census.)

2. Daniel Test married to Ann D. Lawrence now lives on the north west corner of section 23 on 86 acres. (See Page 73 of the 1860 census.)

3. Samuel Test is married to Ann Lamborn (sister to Clayton Lamborn above). The 1850 census listed them on the same page with Samuel, Isaac B. in Butler Twp but the 1860 census tells us there are only two Samuel Tests in Butler township -- the "old" Samuel brother of Isaac B. Test and his son Samuel Test (b. 1832). This Samuel Test (b. 1815) is not listed in Butler twp. in 1860.

4. Rebecca Test. Note the name 'D Coppock' just above the numeral '22'. This is David Coppock. He died before the census was taken. His widow, Rebecca Test, and their children Isaac and Margaret Ellen Coppock are living just north of the 80 acres of S. Test in section 22.

(See Page 77 of the 1860 census.) The census also shows that Isaac B. Test (Rebecca's father) is living with them as well as the twin brother of Zaccheus Test, viz., David Test. Note also that in the census, David Test is listed as 'idiot'.

Zaccheus Test and
Drusilla Langstaff

5. Zaccheus Test (son of Isaac B. Test) married Drusilla Langstaff. They have 74 acres in the northeast area of the section.
(See Page 73 of the 1860 census.)

6. David Test. See #4 Rebecca Test above.

7. Ann L. Test married Samuel Barber. They have the farm directly north of Daniel Test indicated by the initials 'SB,' or Samuel Barber. His first wife was Ann Test. Ann died in 1859. It appears from the 1860 census that Samuel quickly remarried. His second wife's name was Elizabeth Hall. She died on 7/4/1867. (See Page 73 of the 1860 census.)

Hartwell (age 8) is the second child of Samuel Barber and Ann Test. Isaac E. Barber (age 3) is listed on on page 77 of the 1860 census living with Ann Test's older sister Hannah Test Lamborn.

The Children of Samuel Test and Mary Ann Barber:

1. Elizabeth (b. 1816)
2. Ann (b. 1818)
3. John (b. 1820)
4. Jane (b. 1823)
5. Isaac (b. 1825)
6. Benjamin B. (b1828)
7. Samuel (b1832)
8. Lusina (b. 1835

1. Elizabeth Test
2. Ann Test
According the 1860 census, Both Elizabeth Test (age 44) and Ann Test (age 42 were living with their parents. (See Page 77 of the 1860 census.)

Elizabeth Test married Harman Rhodes in 1865.
Ann Test married Thomas Bowman in 1862.

3. John Test -- No record other than died October 16, 1842, at age 22, in Butler Twp,. The Death was reported in Salem Village Register on Oct. 18, 1842. Died of typhys fever in Butler Twp.

4. Jane Test married Robert Harris Jr. Their farm is just south of David and Rebecca Coppock indicated by the 'R Harris' on the map.

5. Isaac Test is listed at the bottom of page 77 of the 1860 census. and the rest of the family is on page 78 of the 1860 census. He lives on the southwest 40 acres listed as 'B Test' -- the 1870 map below is clear that Isaac Test is here.

6. Benjamin B. Test -- No records for him. The only Benjamin Test listed in the 1860 census is the 8-year old Benjamin son of Zaccheus and Drusilla. But See Benjamin Test below in the 1870 census.

7. Samuel Test, single, is a master carpenter. He is living with his parents in the southeast corner of section 23, according to the 1860 Census. See page 77 of the 1860 census

8. Lusina Test married David Harris in 1858. See page 70 of the 1860 census I cannot find them on the map.

The Chidren of Sarah Test and Joseph Stratton:

1. Rebecca Stratton (b. 1816)
2. Anna M. Stratton (b. 1817)
3. Abi Stratton (b. 1819)
4. Mark Stratton (b. 1821)
5. Zaccheus Stratton (b. 1824)
6. Joseph Statton Jr. (b. 1825)
7. Rhoda Stratton (b. 1827 d. 1830)
8. Michael T. Stratton (b. 1829 d. 1854 age 25) 9. Sarah Stratton (b. 1830)
10. Isaac Stratton (b. 1832)
11. Josiah Stratton (b. 1833)

Joseph Stratton died in 1843 and Sarah Test married Henry Lupton in 1852. Sarah Test Stratton Lupton lived until 1880 dying at the age of 87.

In the 1860 Census Henry Lupton is described as a "retired gentleman"
. Sarah Test Lupton is mentioned in the journal of the well-known traveling minister Ann Branson.

1. Rebecca Stratton married Edwin Holloway. P. 724 of Hinshaw indicates they may be in Upper Springfield MM (Damascus--nw corner of Butler twp. -- no listing for them in 1850 Butler twp census.

6. Joseph Stratton married Rachel Brantingham. He now owns the middle portion of the section. Rachel's brother George Brantingham also appears to be living with them. It appears that Joseph Stratton and Rachel Brantingham had no children.

Zaccheus Test and Drusilla Langstaff are still in the northeastern part of the section. The 1870 census shows that Isaac B. Test--83 years old--is living with them. He lived to be 86, coming to Ohio from New Jersey when he was 16 years old. (See bottom of page 1 of the 1870 census. and top of page 11 of the 1870 census.)

Daniel Test's portion is now (optimistically) called an estate. But Daniel Test died in 1864 at the age of 52. His son John Strawn Test is now farming the "estate". His widow Ann D. Lawrence and the family still live on the farm in 1870.. (See page 7 of the 1870 census.)

Clayton Lamborn (age 62) and Hannah Test (age 60) are still at the western edge of section 23. Their son Lemuel T. Lamborn married Nancy Crew the previous year and they are all living together. (See page 7 of the 1870 census.)

Notice that it is Isaac Test (son of Samuel Test and Mary Ann Barber) in the southwest corner of section 23. (See page 7 of the 1870 census.)

We may assume that the land labeled 'Saml Test' is still occupied by Samuel Test (son of the original Zaccheus Test and Rebecca Davis). Samuel is now a widower. His wife Mary Ann Barber died in February of 1870. Samuel Test is now retired and living with his son's family. Page 4 of the 1870 census shows the listing:
Test, Benjamin 43 Farmer
--- Elma 39 Keeping House
Knowles, Mary 3
Test, Samuel 79 Retired Farmer
Samuel Test lived until 1876 and died at the age of 85. He was 12 years old when they moved to Ohio from New Jersey.

Corroboration for this location is that the very next listing in the census is that of Edward Johnson -- living directly south of Benjamin and Samuel Test.

(See page 2 of the 1870 census.) Samuel Test and Maria Randals -- son of Samuel Test and Mary Ann Barber

Samuel Test and Ann Lamborn -- living outside of Butler twp in 1860 -- find them / any children

Where is Isaac Barber in 1870? He isn't with Clayton Lamborn and Hannah Test Lamborn. He was with them in 1860.

Click on the map above for a larger image, and notice the name 'J Dean' just above and to the left of the numeral '23'. This is Jonathan Dean and Elizabeth Brantingham Dean's family. Their granddaughter, Mary Elizabeth Dean married Howard Benjamin Test, grandson of the Zaccheus Test who is living just to the northeast of them.

This marriage was in West Branch, Iowa in 1909. Zaccheus Test moved to Iowa in 1879 and lived until 1913. He may well have been a witness to Mary Dean's and Howard B. Test's marriage. The 1870 census shows us that Mary Dean's father is 12 years old in 1870. (See page 7 of the 1870 census.)

Open the full sized 1870 map of Butler Twp and find 'B Dean' in southeast corner of section 34 just south of Winona. This is Jonathan Dean's parents: Barton Dean and Hannah Jackson. (See page 10 of the 1870 census.)

One of the lots in Winona (northern part of Winona) is labeled 'H Lupton'. This is the house of Sarah Test Stratton Lupton. Sarah Test was 1st daughter and 4th child of Zaccheus Test and Rebecca Davis. She was born in 1793 in New Jersey. She married Joseph Stratton and her second marriage was to Henry Lupton. She lived to age 87 and died in Sept of 1880. (See page 8 of the 1870 census.) This census listing is very interesting. It lists Anna Edgerton, Leydia and Sina Brantington, Walter, Sarah, and Rachel Edgerton and Sarah Lupton. On March 30, 1857 The family of Joseph Edgerton and his wife Anna Stratton (1st marriage - Brantingham) 2nd marriage -- Edgerton were granted a certificate to move to Coal Creek MM, Iowa. We might assume that they are simply visiting her mother Sarah Test Stratton Lupton.

Just north of Daniel Test is Samuel Barber -- his first wife was Ann Test. Their son Hartwell is still living with his father. Their other son

Just east of Daniel D. Test, in section 22 is the name 'Z Stratton'. This is Zaccheus Stratton, son of Sarah Test (daughter of Zaccheus Test and Rebecca Davis) and Joseph Stratton. (See page 16 of the 1870 census.)

Just under the numeral '22' on the map is Robert Harris Jr. His wife is Jane Test the daughter of Samuel Test and Mary Ann Barber. (See page 16 of the 1870 census.)

Somewhere in this neighborhood is the residence of Lusina Harris -- daughter of Samuel Test and Mary Ann Barber, who married David Harris. She lived in the area until 1916 when she reached 81 years of age. (See page 16 of the 1870 census.)

Listed directly beneath Lusina Harris on page 16 of the 1870 Census is the family of Job Warren. Rebecca Test Coppock (daughter of Isaac B. Test) married Job Warren in July of 1868. The names that follow are Rebecca, age 52; Adeline, age 26; Samuel, age 18; Mahlon, age 14; and Ellen Coppock age 16. This is a blended family with Rebecca Coppock and her children Samuel and Ellen. Presumably, they are living on the "estate" of David Coppock.

Looking at the full sized map again, notice the name 'J Whinnery' just above the word 'Winona' in Section 26. This is almost certainly James Whinnery and his wife Rachel Whinnery.

James Whinnery is the brother of
Robert Whinnery who married Phebe Leech
Their daughter, Lydia Whinnery married Joseph Brantingham
Their daughter, Elizabeth Brantingham married Jonathan Dean
Their son, Joseph Brantingham Dean married Laura Armstrong
Their daughter, Mary Elizabeth Dean married Howard B. Test

Rachel Whinnery was a woman to be admired. She spoke at the (first) funeral of Edwin Coppock who participated in the John Brown Raid on Harper's Ferry in 1859. He was captured and hanged on December 16, 1859. At the funeral Rachel Whinnery delivered a moving speech:
"Friends: A brother lies before us, murdered by brothers' hands! ...His physical life was sacrificed, and he was murdered for a principle, and that principle was Freedom!

"...On that broad and expanded brow, may be traced the lineaments of Liberty. Slavery has snatched, as it were, a birdling from our own dove- cote, a brother from our own fireside-what can she more?"

We have Rachel Whinnery's complete speech here.

See the article by C.B. Galbreath in the History Section for the complete story.
